About This Novel
"In the World" is the second part of Gorky's autobiographical novel trilogy. The novel describes the life of the protagonist Alyosha from 1871 to 1884. In order to make a living, he and his grandmother picked wild fruits and sold them to make a living. He also worked as an apprentice to a draftsman, a dishwasher on a ship, and an apprentice in an icon workshop. On the road of life, he went through many ups and downs and interacted with people at the bottom of society. At the same time, he also had the opportunity to read a lot of books. Life experience and a lot of reading broadened Alyosha's horizons, and he was determined to "be a strong person and not give in to the pressure of the environment." With this belief, he left his hometown and went to Kazan.
