When desire sinks - review of "Beautiful Friends"

When I read it, I thought it was indeed Maupassant, and it was so interesting to write a long novel. I enjoyed it all the way here, and there were also some scenes that impressed me deeply and felt that the portrayal was very vivid and delicate, such as Du Luohua's handshake with others when he was about to enter the newspaper office. The original text is probably "Norbert's hand was wet and cold, always trying to slip away from his fingers; old Walter's was cold and soft, neither exerting any force nor showing any expression; Forestier's hand was plump and warm..." A simple handshake revealed the attitudes of several other people toward Du Luohua's entry into the company, as well as the profile of their respective characters. Norbert had a competitive relationship with Duroy, so he did not want to see him join the newspaper office, and his handshake with Duroy was relatively casual and he wanted to escape; Walter was the boss and did not express his position easily, which was in line with his calm, careful and thoughtful character; Forestier had his own interests to consider, and naturally hoped that Duroy would come to the newspaper office to help him, so he was very eager, and with just a few strokes, every character came to life on the paper. In addition, the core of this book is actually a story about a person who is controlled by ambition and desire and sinks into it. It also uses it to reveal the nature of male prostitutes and female thieves in upper class society. There is actually a change in Du Luohua, from being a little ashamed of receiving Clotilde's money to feeling at ease and even finding ways to take half of his wife's inheritance - he has become more and more shameless and unscrupulous; but at the same time, we can also see that the more he does this, the better off he lives, because this society is like this. At the end, Du Luohua's ending is good, and it can be seen that his prospects will be better in the future, and he may get involved in politics, but what about the future? When desire sinks, who can predict what will happen next.
