About This Novel
Lisa, a girl from the London slums, has delicate features, a graceful figure, and is good at singing and dancing. She is the target of all men. Her father has passed away, and she only depends on her mother. However, her mother is addicted to alcohol and has no intention of caring about her. Tom, a young man from the slums, has always been secretly in love with her, but she remains unmoved. Instead, she falls in love with Mr. Blackstone, a newly moved married woman, and eventually becomes the object of everyone's disgust. Reading the whole book made me feel a little sad. Lisa's mother often blames her in the name of love and also PUAs her. Her mother is really a selfish person. Lisa's pursuit of her so-called love was spurned by the world. She gave up on the person who loved her and chose a married woman. At the same time, I also saw women of that era being beaten by their husbands. Alcohol is really not a good thing, but it is not a reason for men to beat women. Before Lisa died, her mother was asking to discuss her grave and coffin. It was really sad and hateful.
