About This Novel
In 1921 in Xiguan, Yangcheng City, Chen Suyan was born under the roof of contradictions - his father was a major with a medal on his shoulder, and his mother was a weaving factory owner with silk and satin in her hands. Half of his childhood was the bugles and maps in the military camp, and the other half was the dyes and machine sounds in weaving. The "inkstone" in his name was the stationery his mother taught him to write, and it was also a symbol of "literary character" in his father's eyes. When the gunshots of the Yangcheng Uprising in 1927 pierced the night sky, and when the Japanese bombing in 1938 reduced the Suji Textile Factory to scorched earth, this young man with "both civil and military backgrounds" was forced to grow up in the flames of war.
