About This Novel
It tells the story of a group of youthful middle school students living at the foot of the West Mountain in Beijing in the early 1970s. Led by their nickname, Dali, they have the advantages of respecting teachers and studying hard at school, but they also have the mistakes of quarreling with classmates over trivial matters and taking the lead in absenteeism. However, their love for the green mountains and green waters is a true reflection of their beautiful life. Although material life was severely lacking at that time, the enthusiasm of the young men could not be stopped. They would go down the river to fish and catch shrimps, go to the mountains to pick jujubes and mushrooms, and swim and have water fights in the mountain spring pools. They put all their energy into their somewhat flamboyant and even arrogant self-pursuit to push their yearning for a better life to the ultimate peak. In the mountains, they happened to meet Xinghua's family by a spring pool, who had been sent to a mountain village for labor reform because of their mother and lived in the mountains. The two sides began to understand each other despite mutual suspicion, and soon, with sincerity, they felt like close neighbors and good friends. From then on, in the silent valley, there were not only the noises of the friends, but also the beautiful singing of Xinghua, the thoughts of each other, and the hazy feeling of love and the ensuing troubles. Dali, who had never cared about anything, had been in contact with Xinghua for a total of 20 days and 30 hours during the two summer vacations. However, after he made an appointment with her to meet again on May Day the following year, when he was walking alone by the stream in the valley, an inexplicable, inseparable feeling that he had never felt before suddenly rose from his heart. He could not control himself and could not stop crying bitter tears that he had never experienced in his life.
