About This Novel
"Pain" chronicles the author Margaret Duras's personal experience and thoughts on war issues during World War II. It also records how she waited for the return of her husband who was imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp. The background of "Pain" is war, and it is a group portrait of people in the war. The neglect suffered by individuals and the vulnerability and helplessness shown in front of a giant have become a criticism of social authority. The narrative of ubiquitous desire and noncommittal love has become a kind of inner resistance of people in the face of unfair treatment in society.
