About This Novel
"Childhood" is one of Gorky's trilogy of autobiographical novels and a representative work of Soviet Russian critical realism literature. The book was written by Gorky with the encouragement of Lenin. It tells the story of Alyosha who lost his father when he was young and lived in his grandfather's house. He spent a repressed childhood in a suffocating family. The whole book is unfolded through the eyes of children, truly and vividly reproducing the suffering and helplessness of the "lead-heavy" life of ordinary Russian citizens at the end of the 19th century.
