Age of Enlightenment
by Wang Anyi
About This Novel
Wang Anyi used her usual steady, meticulous and strict writing style to break it apart and crush it into pieces, telling the story of the extraordinary growth process of the third generation of young people in detail. The novel describes the spiritual shock experienced by several children of cadres and citizens in Shanghai in the mid-1960s when they were suddenly hit by a violent storm, and their subsequent thoughts on revolution, ideals, life, and society, as well as their process from simple and naive boyhood to sensitive and rational youth. Wang Anyi's characterization is from the inside out, full of philosophical meaning and rationality, which makes her novels have a higher level of artistic authenticity and deeper typicality.
