"The Great River Goes East" was serialized in Hong Kong's "National Daily" in 1940, and was rewritten in 1943 when it was published as a single volume. The novel describes a young soldier whose wife left him and his family was destroyed due to the war. The book also vividly describes the bloody atrocities of the battle to defend China Gate and the massacre of civilians in Nanjing by the Japanese army; it provides a vivid record of the bloodthirsty crimes of the invaders. "River East" may be the earliest literary and artistic work to reflect the Nanjing Massacre.
