About This Novel
"Big Sur" is an autobiographical novel by Kerouac. The protagonist Duluoz is a writer and an idol worshiped by the young "Beat Generation". He was invited to take a vacation to Big Sur, hoping to be close to nature and away from its fanatical admirers. But contrary to expectations, the nature he saw made him feel oppressed. He even imagined that the sound of waves crashing against the embankment was a punishment for all his sins. The over-alcoholic Duroz nearly suffered a mental breakdown after experiencing a crazy affair, which also made him painfully reflect on the failure of the Beats' pursuit of their ideals.
