Can't go back to the past
Everyone has memories of the past, and the author's writing makes the people and things in these memories vivid.
He took a job on a ship and went to British Guiana. From there he disembarked and went inland, where he worked as a cowboy in Rupununi, smuggling goods (he didn't say what) into Brazil, and he also brought some young Brazilian women to Georgetown. He opened the best liquor store there and was doing prosperously. However, the policeman who took his bribe betrayed his promise and arrested him.
