There is an "information entropy layer" in the universe - it is the "underlying code" of all matter and energy, similar to the "memory bank" of the universe. Under normal circumstances, the information entropy layer will slowly repair itself, but a certain type of virtual skeleton civilization (non-entity, in the form of "information gap") that lives by "devouring information entropy" is accelerating the collapse of the entropy layer by "virtual stars". When a star's information entropy is swallowed up, it will not explode, but will become an "empty shell".
