About This Novel
In 1894 AD, in the golden autumn of the 20th year of Guangxu's reign in the Qing Dynasty, the climate in the island city of Xiamen was very hot. This day is the 15th day of the seventh lunar month, which is the Buddhist "Ollambana Festival". Various temples chant sutras and worship, and many devout men and women come to Tianjie Temple to offer incense. Although it is not as lively as the Nanputuo Temple at the foot of Wulao Mountain, the Buddhist disciples who offer incense and the crowds who enjoy the scenery and join in the fun are still bustling, keeping the monks in the temple very busy. In the main hall, three Buddha statues sit high on a lotus platform, and eighteen Arhats stand on both sides. Incense is lingering, and the shadows of candles are shaking red. On the throne, an eminent monk sat cross-legged, and six masters sat on both sides, ringing bells and rocks, and chanting words. In front of the Dharma throne, dozens of faithful men and women knelt on futons and listened to the chanting.
