About This Novel

The novel "Day Laborers" describes that at the beginning of the 20th century, in the town of Alslev in the Jutland Peninsula of Denmark, due to drought, the harvest was very poor. The local small farm owners were facing bankruptcy, and the day laborers were even more difficult to make ends meet. Missionary Carlson came to the town to preach, preaching that hard times were God's punishment for people, and asking people to believe in religion and repent. Soon after, the cement company in the city wanted to build a factory on the seaside, so small farmers sold their land and joined the ranks of day laborers. Small farm owners and day laborers who had lost their land flocked to the construction sites to work, and more workers of different types of work came to the town from all directions. They not only brought new ways of life, but also new concepts and socialist ideas. The towering new factory building is about to be built. The factory owner Heppno advocates that the machine brings benefits to everyone, and the machine cannot be stopped under any circumstances. At the same time, the union to safeguard workers' rights was also announced, and everyone is looking forward to the arrival of a new era.
