A Walk Through British History: a Journey into Paradise
by (japanese) Toshiro Nakajima
About This Novel
In the 8th century, before entering the social scene, the children of British nobles would go to Italy with their tutors to study classical literature as the last part of their education - this was the craze of the Grand Tour. This was not only a custom of the nobility, but also became institutionalized in the later period. The starting point and destination of the study tour were the same every time. This behavior was praised by some and ridiculed by others. When the French Revolution broke out and the Great Study Tour was interrupted, these aristocratic children instead traveled among the Lake District in England. They hold travel guides and hone their aesthetic sense by admiring the scenery. The popularity of horse-drawn carriages led to a craze for hiking, where people were encouraged to "walk by themselves and deepen their poetic imagination," while the emergence of travelogues made civilians more eager to travel. The old feudalism was replaced by a passionate spirit of adventure in travel writing, and the result was a succession of world-famous Romantic English poets, including Wordsworth.
