About This Novel
The protagonist of the story, Charles Ryder, and the aristocratic Sebastian are classmates and friends at Oxford University. Through Sebastian's introduction, Ryder gradually enters the other person's life world and learns about the little-known past events of the family living in Brideshead Manor. Sebastian's father, Marchman Sr., Abandoned his wife and emigrated abroad; his mother, who appeared dignified and virtuous, actually lived a selfish and extravagant life. Her irresponsible parents left a mark of shame on the lives of several children and distorted their nature. Sebastian couldn't stand the depressive family atmosphere, ran away from home, and drank all day long to drown his sorrows. Although Ryder and Marchman's daughter Julia were in love with each other, religious reasons prevented the two young people from getting together after all. Ryder also realized that he had a considerable distance from them in terms of social status and spiritual beliefs.
