About This Novel
After her father, Mr. Hull, left the Church of England pastorate, Margaret Hull, the heroine of the novel, moved her family from Hampshire in southern England to Milton, a fictional industrial town based on Manchester. Here Margaret met Mr. John Thornton, who ran a textile mill. The vastly different lifestyles between the wealthy southern towns and the northern industrial towns made Margaret deeply sympathize with the miserable lives of workers, and she clashed with the capitalist Mr. Thornton many times over misunderstandings. Margaret developed a deep-rooted prejudice against the cold-looking Mr. Thornton, and Mr. Thornton was deeply dissatisfied with Margaret's cold and arrogant attitude. However, Margaret and Mr. Thornton gradually fell in love with each other in their "disgust" with each other...
