My Previous Life Was Not Iron
About This Novel
When the train reached Jiangcun, there was no path it took, so we had to walk by ourselves. The adults all went to help my mother, but my second uncle refused to let me go. No one except my brother and I was allowed to get close to my mother. Mom was like a ball of lean meat without bones, piled on the back of a skinny gray donkey by her second uncle. The second uncle supported my mother with one hand, lifted the reins with the other hand and put it into my mother's hand and said, sister, sit still and hold the reins tightly. The mother lowered her head and said nothing, and the reins were hung loosely under the donkey's neck. Just as the second uncle was about to let go, the mother slipped down. The adults couldn't hold it back, so they all came to help. The second uncle was anxious, yelled at the people, jumped on the donkey's back and hugged his mother. We're on our way. No one cared about my brother and I. We all circled around to protect the skinny donkey who was hunching over our mother and second uncle. I took my brother's hand and followed the donkey without saying a word.
