About This Novel
"Ni Huanzhi" is the author's only full-length novel. Based on the primary school teacher Ni Huanzhi, the novel typically describes the pursuit and disillusionment of some intellectuals from the Revolution of 1911 to the failure of the Great Revolution in 1927. It reflects the tortuous and difficult road traveled by China's petty bourgeois intellectuals who demand revolution. Ni Huanzhi is a young intellectual who yearns for revolution. He was enthusiastic and ideal during the Revolution of 1911. After the baptism of the May Fourth Movement, he embarked on the path of reformism. He wanted to use education to transform society and save the nation, but his ambition could only end in disillusionment. At the same time, a new love life and family life are also aspects of his pursuit. His love is happy and beautiful, but his marriage is confusing. Although under the influence of the revolutionary Wang Leshan, he participated in some practical struggles, he finally died of pessimism and despair after the failure of the great revolution.
