About This Novel
Although Liu Erduo, a scholar in the Qing Dynasty, was on the list of the Kyoto Grand Examination, he was never awarded a title by the imperial court, nor was he recruited by knowledgeable people. After a few years of leisure in the capital, he was recruited by a small county in the Morgan region of northern Xinjiang to be the chief clerk of the county government. He became even more bored, put down his official documents, and often went hunting in the forest with some mountaineers. As time went by, he had adventures. One day I hunted a roe deer, cut the meat into the mountains, roasted it, and drank a pot of good wine. I didn't feel drunk anymore. I walked through the forest and accidentally entered the Valley of Death. I saw mountains of snow there, and in late autumn, it was freezing cold. I saw two black objects lying stiffly on the snow.
