About This Novel
Disgusted by people's vanity, sinologist Peter Keane gave up his official position and lived in isolation, spending all his time with books. Unexpectedly, his housekeeper was evil-hearted and tried every means to win his trust and marry him. However, she humiliated him in every possible way after the marriage. Isolated and helpless, Keane introduced a liar as his best friend, was tricked and fooled again, and was even falsely accused of being a psychopath. Although his brother finally drove away the evildoers and recovered his property, Keen, who was mentally stimulated, became frightened. After a daydream, he ignited a collection of thousands of books and threw himself into the sea of fire. "Confusion" was written in 1935. It is Canetti's only novel and his masterpiece. His unique and profound insights, wise and pungent language, criticism of vulgar society, and prediction of the rise of totalitarianism are all vividly displayed in this work.
