About This Novel

This is the sequel to the author's famous work "An Angel Looks Hometown", which records the life experience of Eugene Gant from the age of 20 to 25. The novel begins with Eugene leaving his hometown to study at Harvard. It describes his living conditions at Harvard, what he saw when he returned home for a funeral, his arrest and imprisonment, his experience of teaching in New York, his travels in Europe, and his meeting Esta when he returned home by boat. By narrating the growth process of a young man from a remote town in the southern United States, the author attempts to reveal his inner confusion and express his exploration of the meaning of life and his pursuit of happiness and truth.
