The story centers on two siblings, Tom and Maggie. Maggie's father originally ran a mill by the Floss River. After going bankrupt due to debt, the lives of the two siblings changed significantly. Tom dropped out of school and went out to work, while Maggie took care of the housework. Tom relied on diligence and wisdom to pay off the debt and redeem the mill, but his father died of overjoyed. Maggie was not favored by Tom in both relationships and was kicked out of the mill. The flood surged overnight and submerged the mill. Maggie sailed back alone to rescue Tom. The brother and sister reconciled in the crisis, but unfortunately they were swallowed by the flood.
