My Father Forced Me to Be a Thief
by Chen Ning
About This Novel
Since I was ten years old, I have always wanted to be a world-renowned writer, and by the time I was thirty, I would win several Nobel Prizes for Literature. However, when I graduated from college and was about to put my ideals into action, my old father, who depended on me for life, solemnly told me that from tomorrow onwards I would be a thief. It was like a dice suddenly rolling out seven, which made me dumbfounded. My father is a thief. He is seventy-three years old this year. I think you will be very surprised. I have also puzzled over this: How can a seventy-three-year-old old man have a twenty-three-year-old son? Adopted? Or an abandoned baby picked up on the street? All my guesses disappeared when I looked in the mirror. I can see that, fifty years from now, that face of my father will be unreservedly transferred to mine.
