About This Novel
"Yellow Baggage" by Marta Rojas tells the story: In the mid-to-late nineteenth century, Cuba was still a European colony. The Ministry of Industrial Development and Domestic Market Development is calling for a cheap labor force. Because of this, the criminal trade of trafficking Chinese coolies to Cuba began in 1842. The author uses the second half of the 19th century as a background of a period full of conflicts, and describes the relationship between the two protagonists Fan Ni and Nicholas, highlighting the differences between the two cultures, as well as the misunderstandings and ambiguities between the two parties caused by cultural differences. Through careful layout arrangements and preliminary research on Eastern culture, he artistically outlines an illusory world from the perspective of history and national integration. In this world, rich characters and scenes blend with each other to form today's island of Cuba with distinctive multicultural characteristics. The title of the novel "Yellow Luggage" has a dual reference: first, the yellow-skinned coolies from China; second, the commodities from China mentioned in the article. Nicholas' opportunistic acumen and his all-pervasive sense of smell made him the most important organizer of the coolie trade, constantly transporting Chinese laborers to Chincha, Peru and the island of Cuba. The fig leaf of this dirty trade is filled with all kinds of ugliness and adventure: bribery, hypocrisy, deceit, cruelty, and all the dangers of trafficking across the ocean.
