About This Novel
"On the Water" is a travelogue by Maupassant, which is more sincere, more intimate and more profound than the novel. The travel notes describe the scenery on the sea, record what he saw during the journey, and record his random thoughts: as big as the wise words to govern the country and bring peace to the world, as small as the gentle ripples of the sea water when the wind blows, and others such as the satire of the mediocre and the sympathy for the poor. Leo Tolstoy said in the preface to "The Collected Works of Maupassant" that "On the Water" is Maupassant's "best work".
