Death Row and the Emperor (time and Territory)
by Zhao Dahe
About This Novel
This is a new historical novel based on "Zi Zhi Tong Jian". One autumn during the Zhenguan period, Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty took pity on the prisoners on death row and allowed them to return to their hometowns to reunite with their families and die in Chang'an a year later. Some of these prisoners rose up to resist because they were abused by bullies, some were kidnapped by family ties and went astray, some were weak women whose innocence was destroyed by rumors, and some were loners who were born in the wrong era... Life is full of hardships, where is the ferry, where is the way home? Where to place this constant love and hatred, where to place this helpless and frightened soul? The novel selects segments of the lives of nine prisoners after they were released. Facing life and death, questioning the soul, and thinking about philosophical propositions such as life and death, love and hate, the book is thought-provoking.
