About This Novel

Amsterdam at the end of the 17th century was at the end of the Golden Age when the Dutch colonial and trading empire was declining. The beautiful country girl Nila was attracted by the wealthy businessman Joannes Brandt and married back to Amsterdam. Then she did not escape from the poverty life, but instead entered a dark, depressing world full of secrets: her husband did not touch her after marriage; her sister-in-law Marlene strictly adhered to the discipline of Calvinism and was diligent and frugal about housekeeping to the point of being shabby; a woman of similar age to Nila The servant Cornelia said nothing, but saw everything; even the black male servant from Africa seemed to have secrets that could not be told... One day, Jones hired a dollmaker to build a scaled-down dollhouse of the Brandt family as a gift to Nila. Nila was horrified to discover that everything that happened in reality seemed to have been foreshadowed in this doll house...

After reading the whole book, I had a very complicated mood. The horror written in the Times, but I thought it should be sadness. On the surface, the story of Nila and the Brandt family is told very carefully, but in fact it is not a simple history.
