About This Novel

"The End of the Day" is a work by Nobel Prize winner Kazuo Ishiguro that won the Booker Prize in 1989. It is also Ishiguro's most important masterpiece. The 1993 film of the same name (also known as "Goodbye"), a remake of the novel, starred the famous British actors Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson. It was nominated for eight Academy Awards and six British Academy Film Awards, and became a classic in film history. The novel unfolds with the memories of butler Stevens, telling the various experiences he had during his more than thirty years of service to Lord Darlington. Although he reached the peak of his career, Stevens suppressed his own emotions too coldly and pursued perfect performance of his duties. He missed the last time his father was on his deathbed, and then missed love. Through the protagonist's memories, the novel unravels a person's life journey in front of the readers' eyes. It also reflects the international political landscape during the extraordinary period between World War I and World War II.

There are so few comments on this

I admire the writer Ishiguro for being able to write such an excellent work in such a short period of four weeks. The End of the Day is also known as the remains of the day. Its original name is the remains of the day. It's a very beautiful name. I found that all of Ishiguro's works have very nice names. The protagonist in the novel "The Past Is Unforgettable" and "The End of Days" is Stevenson, Dalton's butler. In order to be a competent butler, he has served the Lord for more than thirty years. He has regarded his career as the whole of his life. He has not even seen his father for the last time before his death. He is cowardly even in the face of love. Self-deception. Miss Kenton's feelings. Her whole life is the pursuit of "" greatness and dignity. In the end, serving the greatest employer she pursues is also the realization of her own values. In the end, he was overthrown by little Digar's words. However, he deceived himself as usual and did not dare to face the employer he worked for. In fact, he was not that great and was gradually going astray. The movie version of "The End of the Day", also known as "Sunny Days Farewell", is different from the novel. In the novel, the Dalton House in the 1950s is now occupied by an American. However, in the movie, the owner of this house is assigned to an American character who appears in the novel, Lewis. This arrangement in the movie makes the theme more vivid and ironic.

Plainness contains huge energy

It well depicts the image of an old British butler who is gentle and pursues professional ethics.

What about literacy?

The male protagonist wants to be a great butler and first chooses to serve a great gentleman. The glory of the employer's family has come to an end, so he denies his experience as a butler.
