About This Novel
The story focuses on the first generation of Chinese immigrants in the 19th century. Eighteen-year-old Ni Dong is from Guangdong. Because his hometown suffered a major disaster, he voluntarily went to San Francisco to build railways in the United States. There, Ni Dong met all kinds of people. There is Lao Ya who only knows how to be patient, Lao You who has a grumpy personality, and Xiao Nan who is timid and cowardly. The United States in the 19th century had a strong anti-Chinese atmosphere, and Chinese laborers encountered many unfair treatments in the United States.
