During the American Civil War, five Union prisoners escaped from Richmond, the Confederate base camp, in a balloon. They encountered a storm on the way and were thrown to an uninhabited island in the South Pacific. Relying on their own wisdom and extraordinary perseverance, these castaways overcame various difficulties and lived on the island for nearly four years, building the island into a prosperous paradise. Finally, a volcanic eruption nearly killed several people until the "Duncan" commanded by Captain Grant's son Robert came to the island to rescue them. The plot of the whole novel is ups and downs and thrilling. It has been published for more than a hundred years and has been deeply loved by readers all over the world.
