About This Novel

"The Poor Man" was published in 1846. It was Dostoevsky's debut novel and his famous work. It shows the writer's basic creative tendency and creative characteristics. It reflects Russia under the tsarist rule in the 19th century, involving political corruption, sharp social contradictions, economic distress and mental pain of small people, and created the two classic artistic images of Devshkin and Varenka. The epistolary description in the work cleverly takes into account the description of psychology and social environment, and at the same time enriches the expressive power and ideological depth of the article through the use of dual perspectives. "The Poor Man" was highly praised not only by Russian critics, but also by Chinese writers such as Lu Xun.

The old man Makar is very kind, at least not indifferent. He is willing to use his meager salary to help the orphan girl Varvara. This is something that few people can do.

Varvara's young, knowledgeable, optimistic and positive personality is very distinct from Makar's old, emotionally unstable, kind but cowardly character. They are both very vivid.

Dostoyevsky expressed his deep sympathy for their tragic experience of being bullied and humiliated materially and mentally, and awakened them to protest against this unreasonable social system.

I just want to be a poor man, not a poor beauty

To be honest, I am becoming less and less interested in novels where the heroine is beautiful but powerless. I would rather read about the life of an ordinary-looking farm girl. Beauty is not a virtue, and women are not vassals, nor princesses waiting to be rescued. I would rather live in poverty as Hugo from Gaogan Catering, which would make me feel better psychologically.
