About This Novel
The protagonist Gradgrind is a retired hardware merchant and a believer in utilitarianism. Whether educating his children or conducting social education, he makes people believe in "facts" and regard life as a "cash transaction across the counter." Under his education, his daughter Louisa was forced to marry Bounderby, a capitalist who was thirty years older than her, and suffered mental torture after the marriage; his son Tom was addicted to gambling and actually became a thief and fled overseas. As a factory owner and banker, Bounderby fabricated his life experience and boasted that he was self-made, in order to paralyze the workers, and finally caused everyone to betray their relatives. By portraying two typical characters, Gradgrind and Bounderby, and their family experiences, the author reflects the class relations and social scene in Britain in the 1850s, and makes a profound exposure and criticism of the bourgeoisie.
