About This Novel
"First Marriage" is set in a village called Gu Widow Po Village on the edge of the Wei River. It focuses on the experiences of three newlyweds, Shangguan Le, Ren Xiguo, and Hui Xingai, who were married in the same village on the same day. It reflects the various ideological trends and contradictions that emerged in the development of rural areas, farmers, and agriculture during the transition from a planned economy to a market economy in the early 1980s. It outlines for us a growth picture of rural evolution in the early days of reform and opening up, and an epic Chinese rural narrative. The rich and different "first marriage" feelings and experiences of the three young people make the novel rich in multiple meanings and colors. The novel's writing style is simple, its conception is exquisite, it has a strong sense of self-awareness and exploration, and its characters are also full-bodied, seemingly plain and thought-provoking.
