About This Novel
"Real Names" was completed in 1979 and published in 1981. With a rare influence in the history of science fiction, it connected the science fiction and technology circles in one fell swoop: it was selected for the Hugo Award and the Nebula Award. It brought dawn to the computer field at that time and became a classic that science fiction enthusiasts and "programmers" rushed to read. In fact, many contemporary Internet "big influencers" have bluntly stated the profound impact "Real Name" has had on them. As a result, Verno Vinci became a popular figure in the fields of science fiction and technology. In the following decades, he won the Hugo Award for many science fiction works such as "Fire on the Abyss" and "The Abyss". Looking back at "Real Names" 40 years later, it accurately predicted the ubiquity of the Internet and continues to influence the development of artificial intelligence and the Internet. In terms of foresight and imagination, Verno Vinci is unmatched.

A science fiction and prophetic novel with a solid technical background
Ferno Stefan Vinci (1944~2024) said: "The best use of science fiction is not to predict the future, but to help us create the future." Indeed. He is a perfect combination of a scientist and a science fiction writer. Half of the book describes in detail the details of the technology at that time. I thought at the time that this was less like a science fiction novel and more like a computer scientist and prophet. When I read the second half of the story, the ideas about the Internet, artificial intelligence, decentralized currency (Bitcoin, etc.), Virtual reality, and global surveillance have now become a reality. This book was published in 1981. Maybe it's because most of the so-called "science fiction" content in the book at that time has been realized. Therefore, I personally think that the solid technology and prophecy parts are slightly more than the fantasy science fiction parts. However, I am more looking forward to his subsequent trilogy: the Fire on the Abyss series. Reference it.
Mechanical Ascension
This ending was really unexpected. The relationship between the male protagonist and the female protagonist cannot be love. The male protagonist's trust is best for the female protagonist's future.
The description of the battle in the computer in the story would probably be inferior to the scenes in The Matrix. It is so unimaginable and so beautiful.
If Asimov's Base is a magnificent epic spanning hundreds of years, then Real Name is a novel like poetry, beautiful and simple.
When I first read it, I didn't have much contact with computers, so many things were very abstract. Later, it impacted the brain again and again, making people immersed in it and unable to extricate themselves.
