About This Novel

The story takes place in Shanghai in the 1940s, a place where prosperity, corruption, and luxury coexist, with sinful smiles and vicious plots. Life is like foreign wine in a glass bottle. You have to enjoy it, but you must not get drunk first, because after being drunk, you may never wake up again, and you may never be able to open your eyes and look at the hazy light of the world. The gray sky is brewing with thunderstorms, and the sultry summer heat brings with it a depressing atmosphere. The door of Ruan's house is closed, surrounded by a European-style metal fence with exquisite and intricate carvings of flowers and vines. The surface has just been repainted with a layer of dark gold paint, which is somewhat incompatible with this ancient house. The ivy in the courtyard blocks some of the windows on the second floor.
