About This Novel

This book is a self-narrated adventure novel written by the famous American novelist Mayne Reed in the 19th century and published in 1856. It touches on many aspects of American social politics, economy and humanities at that time. It combines knowledge and storytelling with ups and downs and fascinating plots. The book mainly describes a young British man named Edward. After graduating from the British Classical College, he was eager to see the outside world. He came to New Orleans in the United States by ship in 1840, and everything in this new world felt fresh. In June of that year, in order to escape the tropical malaria plague, he took a boat up the Mississippi River. On the way, the steamer's boiler exploded during the race and was in danger. This began a series of adventure stories for him along the Mississippi River. Among them are his tortuous love story with a mulatto maid, stories about him being bitten by a venomous snake in the forest, being cheated in a casino, and being frustrated at a slave auction house. There are also stories about him advocating for justice for black slaves, fighting against toubob villains and almost being lynched and hanged, etc. At the same time, he also used a large amount of space in his works to collect rich and real natural knowledge, describing and introducing the human geography and natural features of the Mississippi River Basin. People can enjoy the beauty and be enlightened by knowledge while reading.
