About This Novel

Camus said: Realizing the absurdity of this world is not our end, but a starting point. This collection of short stories by Liu Ma uses fifteen fantastic stories to show us the absurdity of the world while also leaving us with the hope of redemption. Liu Ma is an original artist. He may have pioneered a new way for Chinese language writing: the dream theory writing method. He studied under Surrealism, but replaced the surreal automatic writing method with his own dream theory writing method. At least as far as I can see, there are very few people in China who use dreams and dream-like realms as the main themes of their writing. Someone named Xing Zhe seemed to have tried, but in my impression, he mechanically repeated the dream and indulged in it, while Liu Ma uncompromisingly exploited the dream and ridiculed it. At first it seems that he is indeed trying to express absurdity in a form that goes against common sense, but this absurdity is by no means the absurdity of Kafka and Beckett. It is dispelled and subverted by the logic of dreams, the free jumping of narratives, and the extremely arbitrary delusions and whims, and then becomes the absurdity of absurdity. It is both the end of absurdity and the extension of absurdity. (Silent Ke) Among all contemporary Chinese creators, no one has ever created like Liu Ma: he does not create a poetic atmosphere, does not deliberately use poetic language, insists on narration, and insists on verbal dialogue description - but these most solid ingredients make his novels particularly like poetry, with that hazy, fragile and dim poetic flavor. (Niu Mingyu) Liuma was born in 1977 in Dongping, Shandong.

In this collection of short stories, all the stories are like fables about sleepwalking. All the characters are always in a state of confusion, hesitation, and waking up from dreams. In these stories, the objective reality of the world is no longer important. The "reality" observed by each character described by the author is more important. These characters all live in a world constructed by their own "thinks" and "should". Therefore, for these characters, the objective reality of the outside world seems extremely distorted and weird. Only by returning to their hearts and the world they thought they would find peace, then, what is reality?
