About This Novel

The book consists of six volumes, including more than 300 photos taken by Pelliot's expedition team from Xinjiang to Dunhuang in 1908: the exterior scenes of the Mogao Grottoes, cave sculptures, murals, etc. This set of French editions was published from 1920 to 1924. As far as the Dunhuang Grottoes are concerned, the early comprehensive and detailed inspection was undoubtedly the work of the inspection team led by Pelliot in 1908. On February 25, 1908, Pelliot's inspection team entered Dunhuang from Xinjiang. After they arrived at the Mogao Grottoes, they first concentrated on numbering, surveying, photography and written records of the caves. Pelliot was mainly responsible for the written records and transcribed a large number of Surveyor Wayan and photographer Nouart were responsible for surveying and mapping and photographing the caves respectively. They worked until May 27. During this period, in addition to inspecting and selecting sutras and Buddhist paintings in the Sutra Cave, they were engaged in various necessary tasks in the cave.
