The author of this book, Princess De Ling, was the daughter of the Qing ambassador to France, and was later selected by Cixi as her personal female official. From the perspective of an "ordinary person" who has received Western education of freedom and equality, Princess De Ling describes Cixi's diet, daily life, clothing, hobbies, temperament, character, and inner world in a large amount of space, showing another side of Cixi that few people know. At the same time, the book also records a series of events such as the portrait of the Queen Mother, the Queen Mother's birthday, the emperor's birthday, memorials to Xianfeng, the Mid-Autumn Festival, and the New Year. Many of the contents are mutually corroborated with major historical events that occurred, and are of great historical value for studying the court and social and political life of the late Qing Dynasty.
