by Guo Shiqiang
About This Novel
The Republic of China was an important stage in the transformation of Xi'an from tradition to modernity. As one of the most important infrastructures in the city, the development and evolution of roads is often the forerunner of urban change. This book uses the theoretical methods of historical geography and related disciplines, taking the evolution of the urban road system in Xi'an during the Republic of China as an entry point, and discusses it from three levels: restoring the evolution of the urban road system, analyzing the relationship between the evolution of the road system and municipal management changes, and exploring the conflicts between roads, vehicles, and people in the process of road utilization and the transformation of urban governance reflected in management, in order to deeply understand the modern transformation process of Xi'an during the Republic of China. Using the evolution of the road system as a carrier, this book attempts to explore new ideas for the study of historical urban geography from the perspective of modern transformation from three levels: material entity construction, upper-level institutional evolution, and urban social change.
