The Long Line of Destiny
About This Novel
Nanae Aoyama devoted all her efforts to writing: a relationship that even the most knowledgeable and intelligent people in the world can never understand, a glimpse into the development of Japanese society for half a century after the "World War II", and an understanding of the life picture of ordinary people. "I" was born in the year after World War II and grew up in the Flower Street in Kudan, Tokyo. My mother is the proprietress of a restaurant called "Yae". My mother gave birth to "me" after she met my father who came to the store as a guest. My father and mother separated and lived in my grandfather's house. In the second grade of elementary school, "I" met Tetsuji who lived in a geisha hotel. From then on, "I" and his fate were incredibly entangled. "I" shared all the joys and sorrows with Zheji, and he used a small bottle to hold tears for "me". I have been married twice, but both times after marriage I could not help but follow Zheji, and even abandoned my husband and daughter who loved "me". When we followed Zheji for the second time, we were already over fifty. In order to live with Zheji, "I" endured the hardship of life and the fear of being followed. Zheji, who abandoned "me" for the first time and left alone, decisively left "me" again in one night. According to the address he left, "I" found the home of an old woman and found out that she was Zheji's biological sister. Not long after, we received a call that Tetsuji was unconscious. In a private room on the long-distance train heading to Tetsuji's hospital, I told my neighbor the long story above, which is most of "my" life.
