"The Last Man" is an apocalyptic dystopian science fiction novel by Mary Shelley. The story tells the story of Europe at the end of the 21st century. The Black Death quickly swept across the world, eventually causing Europe to be devastated. Humanity is on the verge of extinction. It also includes a discussion of the British state as a republic, with Shelley attending meetings of the House of Commons to gain insight into the system of government of the Romantic era. The novel contains many fictional allusions to her husband, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and their close friend Byron.
