About This Novel
"Journey to the West" was produced in the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty (1522-1566 AD) in the 16th century and has been circulated in the form of scripts. Wu Chengen wrote the first draft in his middle age based on the content of the script, and further refined it in his later years. Wu Chengen's greatest creation was to change the original story, which was mainly about Tang Monk's Buddhist scriptures, into a story about Sun Wukong's battle against heaven and earth. "Journey to the West" is a classic Chinese novel about gods and demons. It has reached the pinnacle of ancient romantic novels. It has a hundred chapters in total. It mainly tells the story of the Monkey King Sun Wukong defeating demons and protecting Monk Tang on his journey to the West to obtain Buddhist scriptures. "Journey to the West" can be divided into three parts: The first part (chapters 1-7) narrates the origin and experience of Sun Wukong, explaining that he was supported as king by the monkeys, became an immortal, made trouble in the heaven, and was subdued by Tathagata Buddha and suppressed under the Five Elements Mountain. The second part (chapter 8-12) describes the origin of Tang Monk's Buddhist scriptures, including Tathagata Buddha's creation of scriptures, Tang Monk's birth, Wei Zheng slaying the dragon, Tang Taizong's journey to the underworld, Tang Monk's setting out to collect Buddhist scriptures in response to an imperial edict, etc. The third part (chapters 13-100) describes the process of obtaining the scriptures. This is the main body of the book. It mainly describes the three brothers of Sun Wukong who protected Tang Monk on his journey to the West to obtain the scriptures. They went through ninety-nine and eighty-one difficulties and finally successfully obtained the true scriptures.
