About This Novel

This book is one of the most important collections of photography in China. It contains more than 110 photos, including the first six-panel panorama of Beijing, as well as the only remaining photos of the Old Summer Palace and Qingyi Garden before they were burned. From March to November 1860, Beato followed the British and French forces through Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Dalian, Tianjin, Beijing and other places, and took the first batch of war-themed photos and scrolls in China. Most of these masterpieces in the history of photography are currently collected in major museums and libraries in Europe and the United States, and are highly sought after by Chinese photography collectors. At the Sotheby's auction in May 2013, 18 of the photos were acquired by a Chinese collector for 2.1 Million yuan. ?
