About This Novel
"A Brief History of Chinese Novels" is China's first monograph on the history of novels. The book provides an incisive discussion of Chinese novels from ancient mythology to condemnation novels in the late Qing Dynasty. Even Mr. Hu Shi gave it a high evaluation, saying that it "is a pioneering creation, with diligent collection, excellent materials, and rigorous editing" (Hu Shi's "History of Vernacular Literature"); Mr. Guo Moruo even compiled "A Brief History of Chinese Novels" and Wang Guowei's "History of Opera in the Song and Yuan Dynasties" was hailed as "a pair of gems in the study of Chinese literature and art history" and believed that what the two engaged in was "not only pioneering work, unprecedented, but also an authoritative achievement that has been leading millions of later students."
