About This Novel

Mr. Zhu Zongbin was born in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province in 1930. When he was young, he lived with his family in Wuhan, Hubei Province. Later he moved to Peking and studied in the Chinese Literature Department of North China University of Liberal Arts. He started working after the liberation of Peiping in 1949. In 1954, he was transferred to Peking University to teach, first in the Law Department and then in the History Department. He has successively served as a lecturer, associate professor, professor, and doctoral supervisor. He has also served as director of the Teaching and Research Section of Ancient Chinese History and deputy director of the History Department. Retired in 1998. Mr. Zhu's academic expertise is mainly in the fields of the history of ancient Chinese political systems and legal history. His representative works include "Study on the Prime Minister System in the Han, Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties" and three collections of essays, "Collected Works of Caibucaizhai: Research on Ancient Chinese History", "Collected Works of Caibucaizhai: Research on Ancient Chinese Political Systems" and "Collection of Caibucaizhai Historiography". He insists on researching problems from history, starting from the interpretation and textual research of historical materials, first making discoveries and breakthroughs at the level of historical facts, and then analyzing and summarizing, so he can often put forward novel and unique insights. His research results, especially his discussion of the prime minister system and the clan system, are comprehensive, solid and in-depth, and have received widespread attention from the academic community. On the occasion of the upcoming 90th birthday of Mr. Peking University, the Department of History of Peking University and the Research Center for Ancient Chinese History have compiled this collection of birthday congratulations following the common practice in the academic community. The authors of the submitted articles may be students taught by Mr. Zhu, or scholars influenced by Mr. Zhu. The collected articles are arranged according to the era covered by the content. There are also several review articles and recall articles on Mr. Zhu's works, which are listed at the back. Mr. Zhu's resume and bibliography are attached at the end of the book.
