Wen Qiu, a scout of a certain unit of the People's Liberation Army in Tibet, whose father Wen Guangzhi is a former military officer. Wen Guangzhi was unstable in the turbulent times, and had a bad relationship with his brother and wife who were inclined to the revolutionary trend. For this reason, many disputes and conflicts occurred. Although Wen Qiu's mother, Zhang Quanzhu, was inclined to revolution, she had already left the ranks and became a resentful and helpless housewife. Before the war broke out, Zhang Quanzhu died of illness. Wen Qiu was brought back to Nanjing by his father, and found that his father had already had a "new home" there and had given birth to a daughter. Wen Qiu was taken in by a small retreating army. Because he could not tell the whereabouts and identity of his father, he could only be taken care of by the army for the time being. During this period, he met several soldiers of similar age, became life-and-death friends, and got involved in several brutal battles. During the Battle of Wuhan, Wen Guangzhi and Wang Taiyu both died in a battle. Before his death, he realized that he might have passed by his son Wen Qiu who fought on the same high ground. Eighteen years later, when Wen Qiu, already a second lieutenant scout of the People's Liberation Army, returned to the mainland from Tibet for a vacation, he spent half a day returning to the highlands where water conservancy construction was ongoing. People dug up a number of bones. Wen Qiu used his senses to clean up the remaining shrapnel from one of the skeletons, but he did not know that it was the skull of his father Wen Guangzhi. A few years later, in the uninhabited land of the northern Tibetan Plateau, Wen Qiu was seriously injured while performing a reconnaissance mission. Team leader Lin Shijin and deputy team leader and temporary radio operator Wen Qiu both had to make a choice.
