About This Novel

Martial arts novels are regarded as a unique genre of Chinese literature. However, the word "martial arts" originated from Japan. In 1900, Oshikawa Harunami, the originator of Japanese science fiction novels, published "Undersea Warships", which tells the story of Japanese patriots building warships under the sea to fight against foreign powers. This book is very popular and has been adapted into animations and movies many times. Haruno Oshikawa wrote it into a series of six works, collectively known as the "Six Works of Martial Arts". The word "wuxia" first appeared in the second work of the series, "Martial Arts in Japan". Although the protagonist resorts to the power of science rather than martial arts, he still practices chivalrous spirit. The author explains the connotation of "wuxia" through the words of the characters in the novel: "'wuxia' is the spirit of thoroughly resisting oppression to safeguard freedom, independence and human rights, and it is also the spirit of protecting the weak. Infringing on the rights of other countries and others for one's own gain is the enemy of 'wuxia'."
