For more than ten years, the letters from his elder brother to his younger brother filled with concern were like heavy shackles, imprisoning Naoki's life. I only found out about this book after watching the movie. It may be due to differences in cultural education or maybe I have never experienced such a thing. I used to think that it was normal to "not be as guilty as the family members." But after watching the movie, I discovered that it is not like that at all. As long as an immediate family member commits a crime, the whole family must bear the "punishment" together. Even if you have nothing to do with "those things", as long as you are a relative, you are guilty.

The distance between us and evil is only a little bit. After all, one can become an evil person with just one thought. Transforming into an evil person depends on how one chooses. Choice is really important.

To commit a crime, you must realize that your family members are being discriminated against. In this prejudiced society, discrimination has nothing to do with good or evil, it is just human instinct

Mr. Higashino finally convinced me with a complete story: the criminal's family members were "guilty." It is true that as relatives of the perpetrators, they are innocent, but should they be tolerated, accepted and treated equally by society? Is this equality a double harm to the victim and his family, or another injustice to other non-criminals? From God's perspective, I always want to be generous and want to forgive everything. Like Terao, I treat Naoki truly as an equal, not as the murderer's brother, but as an independent individual. And Naoki, who lives such a dedicated life, is kind, smart, handsome, and talented, tries his best to have the most ordinary life, but even with such a small wish, the society is not willing to fulfill it. Every time his life improves a little bit, the label of "murderer brother" pulls him back into the abyss again. For this reason, he cannot have a decent or stable job, cannot pursue the music he loves, and even being with the girl he loves is just a luxury... And he, who is excellent, could have had all this easily! Naoki's lifelong self-redemption is almost impossible to replicate in real life. His step by step can be described as great. When his wife and daughter were also harmed by robbers, Naoki finally truly awakened and realized that as the brother of a criminal, he was completely "guilty." From the perspective of the victim's family, we can clearly know that the criminal's family is not at fault, but their hatred for them is real and can never be erased or reduced, not even a little bit. As the family members of criminals, if they want to live an upright life and live openly in the sunshine, then who should pay for the pain caused by this atrocity?

Self-rescue for prisoners' families

Does one evil thought require a lifetime to repay? From the brother's point of view, there are powerful reasons behind evil thoughts, but the orderly operation of society is not supported by hardships. The existence of the law not only comforts the victims, but also deters the world and makes evildoers succumb to the majesty of the law. Perhaps because he was overwhelmed by reality, or perhaps because he lacked adequate education, his brother allowed his evil thoughts to dominate his behavior, which eventually led to a tragedy. His love for his family makes me extremely sympathetic to him, but I have to admit that this is the consequence he needs to bear. But does the family also need to face social death? The president is right, this is just a way for everyone to protect themselves. We cannot ask everyone to be compassionate and tolerant. Ordinary people are just trying to live a good life, not to mention that the cost of trial and error is too great. Being upright and facing the problem head-on does not really solve the problem, it only invisibly adds pressure to others. The final solution Naoki gave was to completely cut off family ties. Although it was helpless, it was probably the best way to deal with the new family. What if one day I also face such a choice? Although it may be insignificant compared to Naoki's situation, what if it really happens one day? I think I will choose family ties. Naoki also chose to cut off family ties only when he had no choice but to do so. The person who made the mistake has been punished. Even if there may be discrimination in society, the family will certainly not give up on him. As for things like life and death, it shouldn't matter to me, let alone those trivial things.
